TEMPERED GLASS

Insulite utilizes three cutting-edge electric horizontal oscillating furnaces to fabricate tempered glass. These furnaces are capable of tempering flat float glass products ranging from 1/8” (3mm) to 1/2” (12mm) in thickness. Notably, each furnace is equipped with two hearths, ensuring enhanced productivity. Additionally, the inclusion of aspirators enables a smoother tempering process for the latest generation of post heat-treatable vacuum deposited reflective and low-e glass products, currently available in the market.

The tempering furnaces raise the glass to a consistent temperature of around 1200 degrees Fahrenheit. Specially designed ceramic rolls smoothly guide the glass through the furnace, carefully controlling the speed to maintain even temperature distribution and minimize any visual distortions. After passing through the furnace, the glass undergoes rapid cooling facilitated by a set of air nozzles. This rapid cooling process induces a state of compression in roughly 20% of the glass's surface, while the center core remains in tension. The strength of tempered glass is derived from these compressed surfaces, making it more durable and resilient.

Tempered Glass possesses approximately five times the mechanical and thermal strength compared to annealed glass of the same thickness. When tempered glass breaks, it forms small, relatively harmless pieces, reducing the risk of severe injuries compared to annealed or heat-strengthened glass. It's worth noting that tempered glass cannot be cut or drilled after the tempering process has been completed.

Optical characteristics:

The presence of bow, warp, and process roll distortion may be noticeable. These traits are inherent to the manufacturing process and fall within the prescribed limits defined by ASTM Standard C1048.
